As the host or hostess for a pre-wedding party, you are basically planning a party that anticipates an even bigger party - the wedding reception.

Traditionally, the maid of honor serves as hostess for at least one pre-wedding shower. Co-workers, female relatives of the bride and groom or other close friends who are not in the wedding party, are welcome to throw additional showers. The mothers of the bride and groom do not serve as hostesses but they may help out behind the scenes.

In the case of a couple's shower the best man or other groomsmen may help with host responsibilities.

Showers are traditionally held from six months before the wedding up to a week before the ceremony. As host or hostess you must make sure friends and family of the bride and groom are invited, as well as members of the wedding party. Everyone invited to the shower also should be on the wedding guest list.

You'll want to be sure the bride and groom have registered before the shower. Then include information on where guests can purchase gifts along with the shower invitations.
